A former California Department of Industrial Relations employee is suing the state of California and a former employee "John Smith" for sexual harassment. The "Jane Doe" case claims that Smith sexually harassed Doe for almost four years, both in spoken and written forms, with no intervention by the state even after multiple reports were filed. Her lawsuit against the state aims to seek justice for the alleged sexual harassment and failure to take appropriate and corrective action.
Doe claims that during the nearly four year period of alleged harassment, her supervisors and upper management failed to act on any of her complaints. Doe went as far as taking the type-written notes and typewriter ribbon found in Smith's office to California Highway Patrol Officials to gain even more solid evidence against Smith. Even when Police officials concluded that the notes matched the typewriter ribbon, management still decided not to act. In a final attempt to incriminate Smith, police officials installed a hidden camera that ultimately caught Smith placing these letters into Doe's mailbox. Even with this iron clad evidence, they still failed to act, according to Doe's suit.
Nearly 42 months after Doe filed her initial allegations, Department of Industrial Relations managers interviewed Smith about the claims. Smith confessed to all charges and was allowed to resign his job. Doe believes that the state did too little, too late.
The state of California has issued a general denial of the former employee's claims.
